Saint John Henry Newman Catholic School, a well-regarded 11-18 comprehensive school, serves the Catholic community across north Hertfordshire, attracting students from over 25 different parishes. As part of its expansion, a new build project was undertaken, which involved the installation of Supacord carpet tiles and Battleship entrance matting from Heckmondwike, a leading manufacturer of fibre-bonded carpets. Westcotes Flooring, appointed by Kier Construction, was tasked with managing the installation across two new buildings.

Spacious computer lab with green walls, grey carpet, round tables, and rows of computers. Bright ceiling lights create a well-lit setting.

In total, 1,400 m² of Supacord tiles in Steel Grey was installed throughout the school’s classrooms, offices, and various breakout areas. Known for its durability, Supacord is available in a range of 42 colours, allowing it to complement the school’s modern design while withstanding the daily demands of a busy educational environment.

Black-carpeted stairs lead to a glass door entrance with brick pavement outside. Natural light illuminates the neutral-toned space.

Additionally, 48 m² of Battleship entrance matting in Anthracite was installed at the reception area and all external exits. This matting plays a crucial role in trapping dirt and moisture before students, staff, and visitors enter the building, helping to sustain cleanliness and reduce maintenance costs.

Heckmondwike demonstrates its commitment to reducing environmental impact by using 100% recycled polyester and polypropylene, the lowest energy-consuming man-made fibre, in its carpet fibres. Polypropylene is highly durable and naturally resistant to stains and moisture, which enhances the longevity of carpets and reduces the need for frequent replacements. This contributes to a more sustainable lifecycle, reducing resource consumption over time.

The project not only resulted in a highly functional educational space but also demonstrated Heckmondwike’s dedication to innovation and sustainability in the commercial flooring sector. Supacord’s recognition with the CFJ Award as the top-selling carpet solution in the education sector highlights Heckmondwike’s role. As a trusted, industry-leading choice, it remains the go-to option for educational institutions seeking durable, sustainable flooring solutions.
